C & O Canal National Historical Park

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal parallels the Potomac River for over 180 miles, from the port in Georgetown to Cumberland, MD. Used primarily to transport coal, the canal was in operation from 1850-1924. It was acquired by the federal government in 1938 and became a National Park in 1971. In addition to the C & O National Historical Trail, the park offers many other recreational opportunities including rock climbing, horseback riding, and camping.
